Why fur is hard to cut out

Pets rarely sit in front of a plain wall. They’re on the sofa, in the grass or halfway under a blanket, and fur is the opposite of a clean edge: thousands of fine hairs, some lit by the sun, some fading into the shadow behind.

A rough cut gives a pet a cardboard look, with a smooth outline where the fluff should be. Whiskers are even thinner than fur and are often the first thing lost. iLoveRemoveBG decides each edge pixel on its own, so wispy fur keeps its soft outline and whiskers usually survive.

It also cleans up the colour along the edge. Fur that was against a green lawn picks up a green tint, which shows as a fringe once the pet is on a new background, and that tint is corrected as the pet is cut out.

How to cut out your pet

  1. Pick the sharpest photo you have, with your pet’s whole body in the frame, and upload it.
  2. After a few seconds your pet appears on a checkerboard. Zoom in on the ears, the tail and the whiskers.
  3. Try a few backgrounds with the colour swatches. A soft colour often flatters fur more than pure white.
  4. Download the PNG and drop it into a card, a poster or a phone wallpaper.

Tips for better pet cut-outs

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for dogs, cats and other animals?

Yes. It works on any animal that’s clearly the subject of the photo, from dogs and cats to rabbits, birds and horses.

Will it keep my pet’s whiskers?

Usually. Whiskers are the finest detail in a pet photo, so they come out best from a sharp, well-lit picture where they stand out from the background.

Can I keep two pets in one picture?

Yes. If both are in focus in the foreground, both are kept.

Can I make a pet sticker?

Yes. Download the transparent PNG and add it to a sticker app, or place it in a design with a white outline around it.
