Why portraits are worth cutting out
A headshot is usually seen tiny: a round profile picture, a thumbnail next to a comment, a face on a team page. At that size a cluttered office or a bright window behind you pulls the eye away from your face.
Cutting out the background also makes a set of photos match. When everyone on a team was photographed in a different room, putting them all on the same colour makes the page look planned rather than collected.
The tricky part is the outline of the head. Hair against a blurred room, glasses, the collar of a jacket: a rough cut leaves a halo or chops off strands. iLoveRemoveBG works out the edge pixel by pixel and applies it to your original photo, so the outline stays soft where hair is soft and sharp where a collar is sharp.
How to remove the background from a headshot
- Upload the portrait, or paste a screenshot straight into the page.
- When the cut-out appears, look closely around the hair and ears, using the Original tab to compare.
- Pick a background: white or light grey for a professional profile, or any colour from the colour picker to match your brand.
- Download the PNG, then crop it to a square or a circle in the app you’re posting to.
Tips for a natural-looking portrait cut-out
- Stand a step or two away from the wall. The gap blurs whatever is behind you and makes your outline easier to find.
- Face the window rather than standing with it behind you. Backlight makes hair glow and blend into the background.
- Leave space above your head in the original photo, so the top of your hair isn’t cut off by the frame.
- For a passport or visa photo, check the official rules for size, background colour and head position. A plain background is only one of them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it for a LinkedIn profile photo?
Yes. Remove the background, choose white, light grey or a colour, and download. LinkedIn shows profile photos as a circle, so keep your face in the middle.
Can I make a passport photo with it?
It can give you a plain white or light background, but passport photos also have rules for size, head position and lighting that differ from country to country. Check the official requirements before you print or upload one.
Are my photos kept?
No. Your picture is sent to have its background removed and isn’t stored. The result lives only in your browser until you download it.
What about group photos?
Several people in one picture work, as long as they’re the main subject. Out-of-focus people further back are usually removed along with the background.
