What happens to your remove.bg credits on December 1, 2026
They expire. Every remove.bg credit you hold, whether you bought it pay-as-you-go or saved it up on a subscription, can be used until December 1, 2026 and is gone after that, with no refund. Here's exactly what remove.bg's terms say and how to get the most out of what you have left.

What remove.bg's terms say
remove.bg updated its General Terms and Conditions on September 9, 2026, after announcing that it's moving into Canva. The credit rule is one sentence:
"All credits (including pay-as-you-go (PAYG) credits, monthly rollover credits and any other type of credits) may be used until December 1 2026 only. Any unused credits will expire on that date and are non-refundable."
The next sentence matters too: "nothing in this clause extends the validity period that applied when credits were purchased or allocated." So December 1 is the latest your credits last, not a new expiry date for all of them. Credits that were due to run out sooner still run out sooner.
Which credits you have
Pay-as-you-go credits
Credits you bought on their own, without a subscription. They expire on December 1, 2026 at the latest.
Subscription credits
It depends on when your subscription started. If it started on or after October 22, 2025, your monthly credits already expire at the end of each month, so only the current month's are at stake. If it started before then, unused monthly credits roll over, up to five times your monthly amount. That pile can be large, and it expires on December 1 like everything else.
Free API calls
The 50 free API calls a month stop with the self-serve API on December 1. remove.bg is sending API users to Leonardo.Ai, a separate service with its own account and pricing.
Can you get a refund?
Not for unused credits: the terms say they're non-refundable. remove.bg sells through Paddle, which is the merchant of record for every order and "handles returns", so any payment question goes to Paddle or remove.bg support.
The general 30-day right of withdrawal in the terms doesn't help most people here: it doesn't apply once you've used the service, "even in part". If you've paid for subscription time that runs past December 1, ask support what happens to it, because the terms don't say.
Checklist before December 1
- Check your balance. Sign in to remove.bg and look at your credits in your dashboard.
- Spend them on what you'll actually need. Product photos for the next season, team headshots, a logo in every colour. One credit is one full-resolution result.
- Download your results. A credit counts as used as soon as the result is offered for download, whether you download it or not, so save the files right away. Once the site closes, so does your account.
- Check your renewal date. If your subscription would renew before December 1, cancel it in your dashboard unless you'll use the new credits in time.
- Find everything that uses your API key. Scripts, the Photoshop extension, the desktop app, plugins and automations all stop on December 1. Plan a replacement for each.
- Moving to Canva? Its Background Remover needs a paid plan; see is remove.bg still free in Canva?
- On an Enterprise contract? It continues. Ask remove.bg what changes for you.
After your credits run out
For the next picture, and every one after December 1, iLoveRemoveBG works the way remove.bg's website did: add a photo, download a transparent PNG. It's free for up to 50 pictures a day, with no credits to buy, no account, no watermark and the full-resolution result. It doesn't do batches or have an API yet, so if you process thousands of images automatically, look at Leonardo.Ai or other API services instead.
Frequently asked questions
Do remove.bg credits expire?
Yes. All remove.bg credits, including pay-as-you-go credits and monthly rollover credits, can be used until December 1, 2026 only. Any credits left on that date expire.
Can I get a refund for unused remove.bg credits?
No. remove.bg's terms say unused credits are non-refundable. Its payments and returns are handled by Paddle, its reseller, so ask Paddle or remove.bg support about any other payment question.
Do remove.bg credits transfer to Canva or Leonardo.Ai?
No. Canva and Leonardo.Ai have their own plans and their own credits. Nothing you hold on remove.bg carries over to either.
Should I cancel my remove.bg subscription?
If it would renew before December 1, 2026, probably yes, unless you'll use the new credits before then. You can cancel in your remove.bg dashboard and keep using it until the end of the period you've paid for.
Where can I remove backgrounds for free after my credits run out?
iLoveRemoveBG (iloveremovebg.com) removes backgrounds for free, up to 50 pictures a day, with no account, no watermark and full-resolution downloads. It isn't affiliated with remove.bg or Canva.
